Minimum Chips - Goodbye (video - 21MB)

Chances are, if you hear 'underrated' and 'Australian band' in the same sentence, someone will be talking about ex-Brisbane, now Melbourne band Minimum Chips. This video for their track 'Goodbye' from their recently released debut full-length album Kitchen Tea Thankyou is a bit of a Spiked Candy exclusive, I believe, hot off the reel (well, lukewarm - there was a bit of a delay due to my bloggers' block, sorry). It was filmed around Melbourne by the talented duo of Megan Voevodin and Philippa Knack, and I think you'll agree the Super 8 format beautifully suits the gentle feel of the tune. (This would have been a good song for the 'Lazy Sunday' category, but my Sunday was a little too lazy to get it up in time).

This quote from the Age's review of Kitchen Tea Thankyou nicely sums up the album:

A dozen pieces of gently psychedelic electronica variously conjure up the digital glaze of a Japanese metropolis or the romantic haze of 1960s Paris. This is visionary, trippy and playful music, distinguished by the breathy, austere voice of Nicole Thibault.

And if you're old-fashioned and like to have CD artwork or want to go to that special part of heaven that's reserved for people who give money to good bands, try here or here.

Wonderful!Reminds me of very happy times and somehow Stereolab! :)

I agree with Bruno here, but I do get a melancholy feeling too. No use giving the other reference I associate this with (an American duo), because I simply can't remember the name. It's terrible when one's memory does that...

But it's good to see you back :)

Thanks to everyone for their well-wishes. I wish I could say I was better, but it's not really the case. However, this past month was particularly bad and I'd run out of steam to keep the blog up. We'll see it goes from now. I have a lot of visual/head symptoms that can make it hard.

Even though I write a fair bit on other sites eg last.fm, it's a bit easier than doing this because I can touch-type and just let my focus go. It's trying to concentrate on putting stuff on the page here, looking for info that can really blow me out. And then if I use up all my energy doing that, I don't have any left to really enjoy music - and that's the biggest block, because I don't want to do this when my heart's not in it.

I'll take it slowly, but it may be sparse for a while. I did find a medicine (French, of course!) that was helping a little so once I get a fresh supply of that, maybe I can do a bit more.

I really have enjoyed doing this, but it's hard when it becomes a struggle... I was always stretching myself to do it though.

Here's a recent news item that I think explains a lot about what happens in CFS, and I believe this is relevant to my own case:

Thanks for this.

A friend back in Melbourne tells me that they're going on hiatus, as Nicole is having a baby. As such, it's good to see that they've given their fans a lot to tide them over in their absence (the new album, the video, and now MP3s of everything they've ever recorded).

Yes very generous indeed, especially considering the album didn't come out too long ago. :)

So there's a Sleepy Township connection here... I've an out-of-place and possibly forward question Spiked Candy: you don't happen to have Sleepy Township's first album (Set sails - ?)? I've heard they weren't happy with this album, but still it's the one record missing in my collection - and Sleepy Township are one of my favourite groups with regards to "sweet and sour, ramshackle" pop (can't describe the musc, but I love them). I'd take a long and hard look in my music collection and try my best to make it worthwhile for you if we could set up a swap here, if it's possible. Can't find this record anywhere - and this is fairly high up on my list of things that bug me.

Or if anyone else happens to have this record, please contact me...

Melancholy, yes... The american duo that a previous commentor was hoping for was, I believe, Pinback, the author of some of the most brilliant melancholic anthems of the last 5 years!

Yes, I've seen the Set sail album at Tonevendor - I used to buy many records from them. But it's been more than ten years since I last had a turntable and I move around to much to get a new one, so for this and space reasons I stick to cds. It's also why I've lost out on some magnificent pop releases (such as the sublime Metro 7-inch for instance - I've a long list of this sort of music worries). I know my attitude is wholly wrong - I count the goodies I don't have much more than the ones I have. Still haven't given up on Sleepy Township though :)

Thanks for answering

Everybody said it already, but welcome back! Sorry to hear you're not well yet, though. Do what you feel like and what your energy allows. Hang in there!

Well this proves I'm a geek because I was just visiting old territories (indiepages.com) and one thing led to another and I remembered Minimum Chips reminded me of an act I couldn't remember the name of when I wrote a comment here - and all of a sudden I did: Parker and Lily!

What's the use of this (late) correction? None really...

But it does give me an opportunity to wish you all the best and say I miss your posts. Hope all's well with you :)
